New rocket got name: VSS UnityMonday 2/22/16, time 9:25 PM On Saturday 02/20/2016 the new rocket made public, and it was named VSS Unity. Stephen Hawking gave the name for the rocket, for which Branson has promised a space trip. SpaceShipTwo is a new improved version of the first rocket which crashed in October 2014. As usually Branson made the name giving a big event. There were four generations of Bransons and the youngest of them did baptized the ship by a bottle of milk. VSS Unity will shortly start test flights. This time there were no estimate given when the first space flight will take place. I hope it will not take long time. Pan Am ticket to moon from year 1969Wednesday 1/13/16, time 8:08 PM I've been waiting a few years, that I could buy from eBay First Moon Fligt Club tickets. About one month ago, I got lucky and a few tickets were on sale in eBay. You could get those tickets from Pan Am 1968 - 1971. They were reservations for future moon flights which were supposed to start maybe in 2000. Pan Am went bankrupt in 1991 so now, these tickets are collector items. My ticket number is 2218 which means it is one of the early tickets. Tickets were about 90 000. I wonder if anyone Finns in their own name ticket? More information-> Link Picture: ticket no 2218 Picture: A letter from Pan Am 1969. |
What happened 2015 and what I expect from 2016?Thursday 12/31/15 The year 2015 was a bit quiet in my project. Virgin Galactic meeting in England in June was the highlight of the year, where I spent nice time with the other VG customers. The second rocket is under construction and it will have name given in the beginning of the year. The exact schedule for the first flights have not been published, and of course the accident in 2014 has affected the schedule. Another accident simply can not happen.

Tuning my Rocket-UnoMonday 12/21/15, time 6:50 PM Sometimes time goes slowly while waiting my flight to space. One nice hobby while waiting is tuning my Rocket-Uno. Car carpenter Eerik Lehto sawed for me e.g. new hubcabs and new door panels from plywood. Harri Salo painted these parts with space style. Just an awesome job on both! The picture shows one finished door panel: |
XCOR and Lynx Mark IIFriday 11/6/15, time 6:48 PM Virgin Galactic is not the only company plannind to send orginary people to the space. XCOR has been involved also for many years now and their ship's name is Lynx Mark II. Their space trip price is 100 000 USD, so it is much cheaper compared to Virgin Galactic 250 000 USD price. Lynx passengers will fly with the pilot together to the space in the cockpit. The altitude is the same as VG ,a little over 100 km. In 2008, it was told that the Lynx will fly in 2010. It has still not yet happened. More info: |
Virgin Galactic The First Ten YearsTuesday 10/6/15, time 9:03 PM Erik Seedhause has written a book of the 10 first year of Virgin Galactic. The book name is Virgin Galactic The First Ten Years. The book tells why going into space is so difficult and why Virgin Galactic schedule has repeatedly gone ahead. In 2005, Virgin Galactic estimated that the first space flight would take place in 2008. The first 100 space tickets were sold in 2005.
The biggest delays have been because of accidents in 2007 and 2014, which killed four people. Going into space has always been dangerous. NASA estimated that 1/65 of shuttle flights will fail. And so happened. To climb or try to climb to Mount Everest, however, is even more dangerous.
I have been in the queue for 5.5 years and I have not thought of giving up the ticket. After all this waiting for space flight tastes even better! It would have been boring if I would have flown into space as early as 2012! |
The first Danish flew to the spaceWednesday 9/9/15, time 9:03 PM A couple days ago, the first Danish flew to the space. Andreas Morgensen was the second Skandinavian to fly to the space. The Swedish astronaut, Christer Fuglesang, flew to the space already in year 2006. With Virgin Galactic, the first Icelandic (Gisli Gislason), the first Norwegian (Terjo Olsen) and also the first Finn will fly to the space in couple of years. Then all Skandinavian countries have had their men in the space. |
The Secret Life of SpaceTuesday 8/18/15, time 10:10 PM While I was in the Virgin Galactic meeting in England this summer , I met there also my space friend, Nigel Henbest. I met him the first time at Spaceport America 2011 and since we have kept in touch. He has written alone or with Heather Couper about 50 books about space. The first books were published in the 1970s. I had an excellent afternoon with Nigel and Heather. We ate in a traditional English pub, and after that I visited their home. We talked a lot about space and related topics. Finally, we exchanged gifts, Nigel got from me my rocket-boxers and I got their latest book: "The Secret Life of Space". The book is well written, and it tells the history of space exploration. Even thousands years ago it was possible to describe the solar system. I recommend! |
Report from the accident is publishedThursday 8/6/15, time 9:42 PM Last year, 31.10.2014, SpaceShipTwo crashed on rocket powered test flight. It was estimated just after the accicent that the cause was human error, which has now been officially confirmed, (NTSB report 28.07.2015). Even good and trained pilot might make a mistake. Co-pilot released the opening mechanism for the wings14 seconds too early, which caused the accident. Before this the flight went according to the plan. This accident has delayed the project, but now it can resume to the normal stage once the official report is released. The report does not put the blame on Virgin Galactic at any point. The second SpaceShipTwo will soon start the actual test flights. Virgin Galactic has kept us well-informed all the time of the accident investigation. Virgin Galactic made an animation that explains why the accident occurred -> link. News on BBC.COM -> link |
One of my friends, Gisli Gislason from IcelandSunday 7/12/15, time 10:37 PM During these five years I have met many interesting people. We all have in common desire to go to space. Gisli is from Iceland and he is so serious, that he took a tattoo to his arm. We made a short video of us from our UK meeting in July. Link to the video-> youtube Picture: Gisli Gislison's tattoo. My finger points at SpaceShipTwo. |
Virgin Galactic meeting at KidlingtonWednesday 7/1/15, time 10:18 PM Our this year's gathering took place in England. This year, VG did not organize one big gathering, but smaller gatherings in 20 different countries. There was no gathering in Finland, so I traveled to England. The meeting was held at Branson 'barn' located in Kidlington. We were about 100 people, most of them were English.
Like before, VG arranged for us a surprise. The surprise was the Spitfire from year 1944, whose flight we viewed by a pond with champagne. Not bad for a surprise! Vesa and Gisli Gislason. Gisli is from Iceland and we always have fun when we meet! |
Rocket to my rocket carMonday 6/1/15, time 9:44 PM While I am waiting my trip I have time to fix my rocket car. I have purchased two 120 cm long rockets which I am planning to install to roof of my car. Rockets will be in horizontal position while I am driving my car and rockets can be put to upright postion while my car is stopped. Some other things I am also planning to fix in my rocket car.

North KoreaSaturday 5/23/15, time 10:37 PM While I am waiting my space flight, I still have time to travel. I visited in May North Korea, which is a very strange country. We saw a lot of North Korean history with local guides. Our travel agency was Olympia. There were 12 people from Finland and our tour director was wonderful Pirkko Koponen. North Korea was the 50th country I've visited.
