Nigel Henbest goes to space

Saturday 3/28/15, time 5:52 PM

One of my space frieds, Nigel Henbest, has fun with video blogs on his own space journey. He booked the space ticket in 2009, a year before I did. He's a real space enthusiast and has written 36 books on the subject. I have met him three times in our Virgin Galactic meetings, and he is a real gentleman. I follow with interest of his preparations.

Fly to Spaceport America at Valentine's day!

Friday 2/6/15, time 7:09 PM

At Valentine's day, Feb 14th, 2015, Spaceport America gives you a chance to fly there with your own aeroplane. If I could fly and if I could get a aeroplane, it would be amazing to fly to Spaceport America and spend a day there. Thousands of people have already visited Spaceport America, but I think the only person visited it by aeroplane is Sir Richard Branson.

Would you like to buy patch, or an autographed picture of an astronaut?

Friday 1/16/15, time 6:46 PM

People have been visiting space for 50 years now. There have been many hundreds of different flights made and more than 500 astronauts have been to space. From these flights there are a number of patches, stamps, and other memorabilia made. Astronauts have also been in number of photographs. All of these can be purchased now

Some of the best places to purchase are for example http://www.space-boosters.co.uk/ and Ebay. If you search Ebay with "space" you can find more than 800 000 different items. I have bought some myself patches, one Yuri Gagarin medal and stamps. Astronaut autographed picture is the next my list. In the Spacebooster there is for sale for example Afghan cosmonaut Abdul Mohmand autographed picture for £ 9.99. Not bad. Neil Armstrong autographed picture costs much more. Those you can find from Ebay.

Below is the Apollo 17 flight patch, price £ 5.00.

Are you healthy enough to fly to space?

Tuesday 1/6/15

I have often been asked what are the healthy requirements for my space trip. I have said that person with normal physical condition can fly to space without worries. G-forces are not that big and you do not need to do any physical effort. Virgin Galactic space doctor, James Vanderploeg, wrote an article to space.com about Virgin Galactic customers. In practice, almost all of them could make a space trip.

I have met Jim a couple of times. He is a nice man. I suggested that I would want to take a pull-up competition with my pilots before the flight. He thought that I would win the pilots, so that competition is not likely to be held.

What happened 2014 and what I expect from 2015?

Wednesday 12/31/14, time 11:43 AM

This is year is ending soon and now it is time to look what has happened.

Virgin Galactic had the third rocket powered test flight 10/01/2014. The fourth test flight 31/10/2014 failed and resulted in the death of another test pilot. The year 2014 will be remembered for this accident. Virgin Galactic handled the communications of this accident very well and the project is not put on hold. Another SpaceShipTwo rocket was already underway and it should be completed in April 2015. The report of accident will be published in 2015.

My faith in Virgin Galactic has not been shaken because of the accident, and I keep my ticket into space. No one has ever said that going into space would be easy. After all the delays and setbacks my spaceflight will certainly feel much more amazing!

The accident probably means 1-2 year delay for the flights. The first flight into space will probably happen in 2015 or 2016 and my flight will happen then in 2016 or 2017. There will be detailed information coming about the schedule later.

For me this year has been a year of astronaut healthy club. The healthy club continues and occasionally there are some tests. The biggest test was in this year 100 km walk, which I walked 25/10/2014. It took 21 hours 50 minutes to walk the 100 kilometers.

While waiting for my flight I will continue blog writing.

Happy New Year!

Tuning my Rocket-Uno

Wednesday 12/10/14, time 8:27 PM

Now at winter I have time to think, how to make Rocket-Uno even more better. I did get registration plate for it KUU-1. KUU is MOON, so my car is now MOON-1. And have also bought two rockets, which I would like to attach to Uno somewhere. There should be fire, smoke and noice coming out of the rockets:)

Diving trip

Tuesday 11/25/14, time 10:23 PM

While waiting for the big trip I can make many small trips. Diving trip is always great. Now I will go diving to the Red Sea. I have been diving since 2000 and I have now more than 300 dives. My favorite destination is the Red Sea, because of colors and life. I will dive with friends, eat and take it easy for a week. Our dive sites are: Elphinstone, Daedalus, Rocky Island, St Johns, Zabargad and Fury Shoals. Many divers are from Jyväskylä Dolphins.

If we meet under the water during the next week, let's say hello:)

I give full support to Virgin Galactic and I keep my ticket

Sunday 11/9/14, time 8:16 PM

SpaceShipTwo's fourth test flight ended in an accident 10/31/2014. The accident killed one pilot and another injured. This accident no one liked, but when it comes to space rockets accidents are possible, especially in the test phases. When the accident happened, Virgin Galactic start to communicate immediately. Their information have been directly and honestly. US authorities (the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB's)) will investigate the accident and inform the foundings when the studies are complete. In this step has already been stated that the rocket motor did not explode and it did not cause the accident. As a possible cause of the accident is considered at this stage a human error.

Virgin Galactic will continue with the project. They have another spaceship almost ready and they are not prohibited from continuing testing and project. The accident will cause some delays in the project, possibly 1-2 years.

I will continue on the project and I will give full support to Virgin Galactic. I keep my ticket and I do not ask for my money back.

100 km walk done

Monday 10/27/14, time 1:28 PM

I started 25.10.2014 at 13.00 to walk 100 km. The event is called "Sysimusta Satku (=Very Dark 100 km Walk" and there were 54 walkers at start. The event is organized http://kerkesix.fi/ and it was held for the 13th time. 24 walkers completed the walk this year. I had walked in the last 2.5 months about 200 km, and at the same time I tested the functionality of the equipment. Eric Lehto had guided me walking and preparations. Without his guidance I would be unlikely to reach the finish line. Mental preparation was the most important thing of all, because 100 km walk was just insanely heavy physical performance.

Walk to 50 km was physically quite easy and nearly all reached it. From 50 km to 80 km there was more aches and pains, and the last 20 km we went just pure perseverance. I was walking in a group of 4 and we all walked the 100 km for the first time! Teppo Pirttioja and Eerik had tried a few times and I and Niina Sallinen, we did it with our first try. Time was 21 hours and 50 minutes.

The atmosphere at the finish was indescribable and the picture below tells everything. All the pains and aches had been left to the 100 km walk. More photos are in the album "100 km walk." Distance to space is also 100 km. If someone would build a road into space, I now know that I could walk there! Documentary project were also filming the journey, and especially from 80 km to 100 km they filmed good material for the document.

100 km walk is coming

Friday 10/17/14, time 2:48 PM

I have been practicing for 100 km walk some months now. The 100 km walk takes place in 25.10. in the Helsinki region and I have 24 hours time to get to the finish. It will really test my condition and mental strength. Yesterday after work, I walked 32 km and it went pretty well. About half of those will try to walk the 100 km will reach the finish. After a week I will know to which half I belong. And if I do not get there this year then I can try again.

Virgin Galactic is my touhgest project

Saturday 9/13/14, time 10:43 PM

Sir Richard Branson told a couple of days ago that Virgin Galactic has been his most toughest project. The difficulty of the project has been a surprise and schedule have not kept even though they have 200 engineers at work. Branson does not fly into space before it is safe. Last year, he estimated that he will be flying to space by the end of 2014. It will not happen. At the end of 2014 is expected that the first test flights into space will happen.
